You know the fun, most times biased, class vote held at the end of the school year to determine who was the ‘most popular’, ‘best dressed’, or the ‘most likely to succeed’? Well, at the end of my 8th grade year, homeroom 301 held mock elections to determine the best of the best of the class of 1997.
I was typically a quiet student, but I wouldn't consider myself to be shy. In fact, I was engaging, friendly and funny. Quite hilarious if I do say so myself. Needless to say, I was fully prepared to win ‘class clown’. I practiced how I was going to accept my award: “Should I do my best Steve Urkel impression and hit them with a “Did I do that?” or maybe an “Alllllrighty Then” à la Ace Ventura.
While I debated on which would get the most thunderous eruption of laughter, my name was called.

It all started with The Terminator. Arnold Schwarzenegger playing a cyborg assassin is my earliest memory of my obsession with dystopian sci-fi films. I was always especially intrigued by those with the “man vs. machine” trope: I-Robot, BladeRunner, The Matrix, you get the picture. By the time I got to Avengers: Age of Ultron, my intrigue turned to angst, and I was fully convinced that the robots were going to rebel against us and take over the world. I still haven’t been fully convinced otherwise, but with the rapid development in the technology of AI in the last few years, my more immediate concern has been whether or not they are going to take over my job.
